Abstract:
The voltage excited by a beam as it passes through an accelerating cavity is depends on the velocity of the beam, and this can have have very significant effects on the RF power required to accelerate the beam, and on the design of the power couplers.
This note describes an optimisation of the ESS linac, and shows the significant differences that arise when the velocity dependence of the RF coupling is ignored. Important consequences for the spoke cavity section are described.
